U.S. Rep. Schwartz Wins Big over Challenger Rooney

Takes election by nearly two-to-one margin.

U.S. Representative Allyson Schwartz D-13 won a fifth term Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Joe Rooney soundly by garnering 69 percent of the vote to Rooney's 31 percent, state results show.

"Tonight is a great victory for the state, we're seeing even more blue than people expected. We're going to hold republicans accountable, we're going to win the country and keep going forward," said Schwartz at a Philadelphia Obama Victory Party at the Warwick Hotel.

Seen as a rising star in the Democratic party, Schwartz also spoke on stage at the Democratic National Convention in September. Challenger Rooney attempted to paint Schwartz as someone who had neglected her district in pursuit of loftier goals. However, the message didn't seem to resonate with voters.

"We worked as hard as we could, but at the end of the day we certainly trust the decision of the voters," said Rooney. "I have to congratulate Allyson Schwartz on her victory...but as Republicans, tomorrow we pull up our boots and go right back to work."

I spent most of the day outside 5-2 Queen of Peace with Joe's wife electioneering. A real American family. It is the voter's loss that Joe was not elected. I guess we get what we deserve. Hopefully Ms. Schwartz will come out of her cocoon and really represent the new 13th district.

I said back in September that Schwartz would probably beat Rooney by 10-15% without even acknowledging there was a race. I didn't think she would have won by 38% of the vote -- which is astounding even to me. I didn't vote for either candidate (choosing instead to vote in favor or Nate Kleinman) but I respect Joe Rooney for his persistence in trying to debate Ms. Schwartz and wish him well.

Small quibble perhaps, however, last time I checked, Stella Blu and Gypsy Saloon were both in WestRead More Conshohocken, not Conshohocken. Credit where credit is due, please. I'm terribly proud of my hometown, you see.
