Norristown Man Drives into Poles, Trashcans in Conshy While Drunk, Police Say

The Sunday night crash took out a township sign and a PECO utility pole, according to police.

Whitemarsh Police arrested a Norristown man after he allegedly crashed into a row of trashcans, a township sign pole and a PECO utility pole on Sunday night. 

Nicholas M. Chaban, 53, of the 100 block of Center Avenue, was arrested at about 4:30 p.m. after police say he drove off the road while driving an orange Dodge Challenger in the 1000 block of Hector Street.

A witness said he helped the man, later identified as Chaban, exit the vehicle's driver side seat after the crash; Chaban then fled on foot toward Spring Mill Road, the report continued.

Police found Chaban walking in the 1000 block of Spring Mill Road; he had blood on his pants and his jacket, and also suffered a minor head injury, police said. 

According to police, Chaban smelled of alcohol and admitted to driving the Challenger into the pole. Police said Chaban had five loose valium pills in his pants pocket, and Chaban said he didn't know how many "10 bangers" he had taken, referring to the drugs.

Chaban was previously arrested on DUI charges in February 2002 in Lower Salford, according to court documents.
