Attempted Scammers Target Lafayette Hill Man, Police Say

The resident said he needed to send 1 percent of his 'winnings' to arrange for an armored car, according to police.

A man impersonating a U.S. Customs agent from Miamia called a 68-year-old man last week and told him that the "Border Patrol" was holding a package for him — a $525,000 check, Whitemarsh Police said. 

The alleged scammer then told the Whitemarsh resident that he would need to send a check to "Miami Airport U.S. Customs" in the amount of 1 percent of the winnings to arrange for an armored car to get the check  to Pennsylvania. 

The "customs agent" said the check was from the "American Sweepstakes Co.; the man received the call on Jan. 23.

According to police, there have been many scams involving the same type of calls recently; the Whitemarsh resident said that he is bombarded with attempted scams via phone and mail every day.
