Larry Kaplan, owner of Top This! Frozen Yogurt in Lafayette Hill, is competing for the title of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) “Man of the Year” honor, based on a fundraising campaign.
Kaplan is competing over the next ten weeks, and each dollar he raises on behalf of the non-profit will count as one vote towards the title.
The money raised will benefit the LLS mission to cure blood cancers, and to “improve the quality of life for patients and their families,” according to the organization.
“LLS' continued advancements over the years are responsible for the blood cancer survival rate doubling and tripling; in some cases, the survival rate has even quadrupled,” Kaplan’s fundraising page says.
Founder of Varsity Fitness, Kaplan suffered a spinal chord injury in 1992 and was told he would be unable to run or play sports again – but he dedicated himself to proving the doctors wrong, and “embarked on a mission to build his body through science,” according to his fundraising webpage.

The business owner, who lives in Lower Merion, will hold fundraisers in the store, one of which will feature the 2012 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Girl of the Year” Karli Meller.
In 2012, participants in the competition raised $442,000 on behalf of the LLS.
