Plymouth Meeting can once again count two local celebrities amongst its population-- at least until Friday. Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison, of the popular Preston and Steve morning show on 93.3 WMMR, are back in town for their annual "Camp Out for Hunger" event, in which the pair live out of an RV in the Metroplex for five days to garner donations for the Philabundance food bank.
Preston and Steve did their first show from the location Monday morning, taking a short walk from trailer to tent to broadcast live from the parking lot. Meanwhile, volunteers outside collected hundreds of pounds of food donations from visitors.
"We got here a little before 5 a.m., and people were already showing up," said Dani Gallo, a member of the MMaRmy promotions team. "Canned foods are the best thing to donate, but you can give cash or drop off a check."
By the early afternoon, a team of about a dozen volunteers, clad in blue shirts, were sifting through and sorting the donated items. Gallo says that the largest group donation made Monday morning was 615 pounds, and that an individual donor had dropped off 583 pounds of food. Each day, the largest individual donor wins a prize, ranging from Philadelphia 76ers tickets to a pair of Electric Factory all-access passes, while the largest overall donation from a business will win the right to host a live broadcast of the Preston and Steve show.
In addition, celebrities and athletes such as director Judd Apatow, Flyer Scott Hartnell, 76er Spencer Hawes, and the band Gas Light Anthem are scheduled to make appearances throughout the week.
Now in its eighth year, Gallo says the Camp Out has grown dramatically.
"When they first started, Preston and Steve were the ones driving the forklift, in between broadcasts," Gallo said. "Now that it's grown so much, they can do their full broadcast and we have so many volunteers, even people taking off work just to help all day."
According to the event's website, donations of canned goods like tuna, pasta, stew, chili, vegetables, or fruit, and items such as Mac and cheese, peanut butter, and cereals are needed most. Checks can be made out to Philabundance.
Donations will be accepted Tuesday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday from 6 to 10 a.m. The Metroplex is located at 2620 Chemical Road in Plymouth Meeting.
