Colonial Neighborhood Council Food Drive Seeks Half-a-Ton

Longtime Conshohocken resident and business owner Brian Coll said the Colonial Neighborhood Council has been in existence for his whole life. He said he remembers his family purchasing items there when he was a kid … and also remembers his family donating to the organization.

Now, he’s looking to supply the nonprofit organization with 1,000 pounds of food.

Coll, who owns Coll’s Custom Framing in Conshohocken, is organizing a month-long food drive for the CNC, and he’s looking to residents and the business community for help.

“It’s really a lot of small businesses banding together to help create this drive,” Coll said.

The drive, which lasts through Nov. 29, has several drop-off points in the Conshohocken area — and Coll said the goal of 1,000 pounds could be within reach.

“Smaller businesses as well as bigger places like the Mortgage Network and Coldwell Banker have joined in the drive,” Coll said. “And I’m thrilled that we already got an office building involved.”

Coll, who is on the CNC board, said he noticed while picking up and delivering food ("Grass roots, I know," he said) that the shelves at the CNC are depleted. The food pantry is coming off of what he calls a “tough summer” and is out of the basics — like, “tomato-soup” basics. Coll said with people thinking ahead to the holidays, now is a good time to reach out for donations.

It’s something of a misconception that people in need of food are poor or homeless.

“It’s not that,” Coll said. “People may be retired for 10 years and now, maybe their monthly check isn’t covering enough anymore. Maybe someone raising a family fell behind on a bill or two, or maybe someone who is considered affluent just lost his or her job. They all might need a little something extra, like an extra meal. And hopefully, that person can turn around and then donate to the [CNC] down the road.”

Some of the businesses participating in the food drive are:

  • Coll's Custom Framing
  • The Conshohocken Free Library
  • Conshy Consignment
  • Aim High Studio
  • Coldwell Banker

The final night will be the Conshohocken Mayor's Special Events and Conshohocken AMBUCS Tree Lighting held Nov. 29.
