Much like the saying, “Behind every successful man there is a good woman,” in the world of high school marching bands, behind every successful band is a well trained, dedicated pit crew, and Pottstown High School has one of the best pit crews in southeast Pennsylvania. This year, for the third consecutive year, the crew which is made up of fathers and mothers of the marching band, was recognized at the Boyertown Cavalcade for the third consecutive year as the “Best Pit Crew.” Pit “Boss” Paul Kolbmann said, “The Boyertown Cavalcade is our super bowl. The Pit Crew starts to prepare the trailers and equipment in June. Some of the parent members of the Pit Crew have showed their loyalty by remaining part of our group after their children have graduated. In the summer there are many late nights during the week and long hours on weekends from this volunteer group.”
Competing against 15 other bands, competition was fierce. When the announcement was made by the judges that the Pottstown Pit Crew had won “Best Pit Crew” award, a loud roar of cheers and chants erupted from the Pottstown Marching Band. Kolbmann noted, “Seeing the pride and smiles on the faces made every minute of our preparation work worth it.”
Kolbmann also expressed a sincere thank you to the Boyertown Marching Band, staff, and parents for a great cavalcade.
Mike Vought, Pottstown High School Marching Band Director, who is always proud of his students and parents, expressed, “This is another example of the type of dedication and loyalty that surrounds the Pottstown School District music program. I am honored to work with an outstanding group of students and parents who understand the value of participating in co-curricular activities.”
Members of the Pottstown Pit Crew are: John Mutter, Joe Campbell, Jay Lafferty, Shawn Lafferty, Neil Fuerman, Lynette Andrews, Phil Vontor, Tammy Vontor, Cole Sellers, Ben Hayes, and Paul Kolbmann.
