Remembering Local Casualties of the Iraq War

In honor of the 10th anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq, Plymouth-Whitemarsh-Conshohocken Patch honors local heroes.

 

The Iraq War began ten years ago this week, on March 19, 2003. 

According to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, including many from Pennsylvania.

CNN has created a dynamic interactive map of all casualties in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Among them are three area men, including one from Plymouth:

  • Sgt. Sherwood Russell Baker, 30, of Plymouth. Killed in a large explosion during a military raid looking for suspected 'chemical munitions' at a building in northeastern Baghdad, Iraq, on April 26, 2004. Sgt. Baker lived on Shawnee Avenue, and was also known as D.J. DaPhantom.
  • Cpl. John Harrison Todd III, 24, of Bridgeport was one of three Marines killed when a roadside bomb exploded as their Humvee passed by the device in Baghdad on June 29, 2004.
  • Sgt. 1st Class Paul Daniel Karpowich, 30, of Bridgeport was killed when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive inside the mess hall at Camp Marez in Mosul, Iraq, on Dec. 21, 2004.
