For the first time, Colonial Middle School Theater Program students will put on a production of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical, “Oklahoma!”

The production will run on March 7, 8 and 9 at the school, located at 716 Belvoir Road in Plymouth Meeting.

According to Jeffrey Cooper, one of the production’s directors, this is the first time that Colonial Middle School Theater Program will present “Oklahoma!”

“As you look at our past 12 years of shows, we have exposed our students to some great classics,” Cooper said in an e-mail.

Cooper said that the school has presented such plays in the past as:

  • “The Music Man, Jr.”
  • “Fiddler On the Roof ,Jr.”
  • “Guys and Dolls, Jr.”

However, more recently, Cooper said that the repertoire of production selections has turned toward more, “Disney-like shows,” including

  • “Aladdin, Jr.”
  • “Mulan, Jr.”
  • “G2K Cinderella”
  • “Alice In Wonderland, Jr.”

“Our focus, as a staff, this year was to bring back a great ‘golden oldie,’ ‘Oklahoma!’ Cooper said. “And, make it accessible to sixth, seventh, eighth graders.”

According to the Plymouth-Whitemarsh Patch Calendar listing for this event, “Oklahoma!” is a timeless musical that has all the elements of a hit, including romance, stunning sets and costumes, show-stopping dances and highly memorable tunes.

As part of its annual spring production, nearly 75 students have worked diligently since late October both on stage and back in preparation of the show.

Students taking on lead roles for the performance are Josh Kurman, Will Saltzburg,  Jessica Lawder, Olivia McMaster, Michael Simons and Lauren Quigley.
