Alleged DUI Hit and Run Reported at Erdenheim Farms by Off-Duty Officer
An off-duty Upper Merion Police Officer reported the incident and made the initial vehicle stop.
A Fort Washington man was arrested for an alleged DUI Hit and Run after an off-duty police officer witnessed him drive through an Erdenheim Farms fence in Lafayette Hill, according to the Whitemarsh Township Police Department.
Upper Merion Police Officer Brendan Dougherty reported a vehicle crash on the 600 block of Thomas Road to the Whitemarsh Police at 2:20 a.m. on Jan. 23. He said that a vehicle damaged six sections of the Erdenheim Farms fence and then left the scene, according to a Whitemarsh Township Police report.
Dougherty followed the fleeing vehicle and stopped it before Whitemarsh Police arrived, after he witnessed the car “swerving all over the roadway," the WPD report states.
The driver, Robert Curt Gaines of Fort Washington, was allegedly combative with police upon being stopped, police said.
According to the report, Gaines’s dark-colored Kia sustained front-end damage.
Police said that Gaines showed signs of intoxication and was taking to Mercy Suburban Hospital for a blood draw.
